Alice Nieuwboer is an emeritus professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences. With a clinical background as a physical therapist, Alice established the PRO-Lab, a collaborative research lab dedicated to advancing rehabilitation in Parkinson’s disease (PD). Her team has made significant contributions to gait and motor control research in PD, particularly in identifying the deficits underlying freezing of gait (FOG). The PRO-Lab actively conducts several clinical trials and cohort studies to investigate the effects of rehabilitation and disease progression on gait. Notably, Alice’s team has completed several studies, exploring how FOG can be addressed through cueing strategies and split-belt treadmill training. In partnership with international collaborators, Alice is advancing research into digital mobility outcomes derived from real-world gait assessment. Collaborating with KU Leuven engineers, her team has also developed a hybrid artificial intelligence-based tool that combines technologies to enhance freezing detection, paving the way for innovative approaches in PD rehabilitation.
