Dr. Anna Estraneo is a neurologist with over 25 years of clinical and research experience in the care of patients with severe acquired brain injury (sABI) and disorders of consciousness (DoC). She dedicated her professional career to care patients with neurological disorders both in the post-acute phase (as the chief of the rehabilitation unit for DoC) and in the acute phase (as neurologist in Neurology Department and as consultant in the ICU for the past 5 years). She currently works at IRCCS Don Gnocchi Foundation Multicenter Rehabilitation Unit as Head of Research Unit on Personalized Rehabilitation Unit for patients with sABI. Dr. Estraneo actively contributed to international and national clinical guidelines and scientific consensus in neurorehabilitation.

Relevant Professional Skills/Experiences

  • Her expertise centers on the use of multimodal clinical, neurophysiological (EEG, evoked potentials) and neuroimaging (MRI, PET) diagnostic tools, to assess prognosis and guide rehabilitation.
  • She has led multicenter studies—also within the IBIA and EAN networks—on prognostic markers for consciousness recovery, and published extensively on clinical outcomes in DoC and on the caregiver burden (ORCID ID: 0000-0001-6646-5626).
  • In addition, she now explores innovative neurorehabilitation strategies, including virtual reality and robotic-assisted therapies in sABI.
